Processors quote rates in different ways: a percentage, a percentage plus cents, a set of tiers, a flat fee. That makes comparison hard on purpose or by accident. Your effective rate cuts through all of it.
The formula
Effective rate equals total processing fees for the month divided by total card volume for the month. If you processed $40,000 and paid $1,240 in fees, your effective rate is 3.1 percent.
Why it beats the quoted rate
- It includes every fee: monthly, per-transaction, batch, PCI and annual charges.
- It reflects your real mix of cards and how you accept them.
- It makes two very differently structured offers directly comparable.
What is a good effective rate?
It depends on your business. A shop where most customers tap debit cards in person will have a lower floor than a business that keys in rewards cards over the phone. The floor is set by interchange; what matters is how far above that floor you are paying.
Watch it over time
Calculate your effective rate every few months. If it rises while your sales mix stays the same, fees have changed. That is the moment to ask questions, or to send us a statement.
